Family Christmas Traditions
We don’t officially start the Christmas season until December 1st at our house. We like to enjoy all the other seasons and holidays to the fullest. With that being said, when December 1st rolled around, we were already out picking out our tree!
The Christmas Tree
Fake or Real? I’ve had both and both have been extremely special at each moment in my life. Growing up we always had a fake tree. We even made our own ornaments and my mom kept them all and has passed down to my sister and me. When I met my husband, he wanted a real tree. I was hesitant at first because that was not what I was used to, but now I LOVE it! It is our own tradition that we have started. We always get a Douglas Fir and I love how wonderful it smells!
Ornaments
Another tradition my husband and I started when we met was getting a new ornament each year that signifies something special that happened during that year. Those are my favorite ornaments on the tree! We have one from when we got engaged, married, even one from Charleston where we spent our honeymoon. My husband even went above and beyond last year and got me a JJ Watt ornament because he knows he is my favorite NFL player…he really is the best (my husband that is)! This has become one of my favorite traditions we do together, and I love picking out our ornament for the year!
Christmas Eve – Eve
This one started when we were kids. My parents would always let my sister and me open one small present on Christmas Eve – Eve. We are now 33 and 30 and my sister has a soon-to-be 16-month-old son and we STILL do this! My dad always gives us backlash about opening a gift on Christmas Eve-Eve now that we are adults. He says we are too old for it, but we tell him you are never too old for presents or traditions! I think my sister and I love to still do it because that is what we did as kids and we want to carry the tradition on with our kids.
Those are just a few of my favorite traditions that my family and I do. What family traditions do you have? What festive fun activities will you be getting up to?
